We've finalized the date for the 2013 Broward Walk Now for Autism Speaks event, which will now be held on Saturday, October 26, 2013. As in the past, the walk will take place at Nova Southeastern University on the Alvin Sherman Library Green. Registration and the Resource Fair will begin at 8:00 AM, with the Walk itself starting at 10:00 AM. We'd like to give a special thanks to our honorary Walk chair, NSU President George Hanbury. FACT: Nearly one third of Florida's third graders attending public school cannot read at minimally proficient levels.

 

And, sadly, those children are four times more likely to drop out of high school. In an effort to ensure more children are reading at grade level by the end of third grade, United Way of Broward County is entering the second year of ReadingPals - a three-year initiative focused on engaging, training and deploying volunteer "reading pals" in our community. The focus of this initiative will be working with First Grade students in the lower-performing schools throughout Broward County.  Volunteers will be asked to dedicate one hour a week for 25 weeks starting in September 2013 to read in individual or small group settings.   (Trainings for volunteers will start on June 27, 2013)

Make a Difference in a Child's Life: Volunteer Today

Tutor a Child and Help Them Succeed in School

    

Did you know that nearly one third of Florida's third graders attending public school cannot read at minimally proficient levels?

United Way of Broward County is entering the second year of ReadingPals - a three-year initiative focused on engaging, training and deploying volunteer "reading pals" in our community to help our youth succeed in school. 

The program will begin in September of 2013 and all volunteers will be trained on the curriculum prior to the start date. The next training will take place on Wednesday, July 24.   

 
Once the program begins, volunteers will be asked to dedicate one hour a week (for 25 weeks) to read in individual or small group settings. Partners in this exciting new program include:  United Way of Broward County, The Children's Movement, Broward County Public Schools, United Way of Broward County's Women's Leadership Council, Children's Services Council of Broward County and Broward County Public Library Foundation.

Junior Achievement of South Florida, Inc. partners with ASP, Inc.(an afterschool care provider for the Broward County Public School District). We are currently looking for college students majoring in education to teach JA curriculum to several afterschool sites.  By signing up to teach the 5-6 lesson curriculum you would be paid a stipend of $100 per class that is taught.  One class represents teaching a 5 to 6 lesson curriculum to an assigned grade of students. Typically you teach one lesson per week in a JA program.

Listed below is additional information on the program.

·       These are kindergarten through 5th grade programs to be completed over a 5 to 6 week period.

·       The program will start as soon as possible and end by August 8^th.

·       Each Broward College Student attends training and receives materials.

·       1.5 hour training and materials pick up takes place at JA World on the Broward College-North Campus.

·       Call Sennetha Desroches at Junior Achievement at 954-979-7101 to schedule an appointment between June 24^th and July 5^th.

·       Day of week (Monday through Thursday) and actual class visit time will vary from school to school.

·       Broward College Students will set their weekly schedule with their assigned ASP, Inc. Director at the school.
